International Advanced Course: Strategic Communication & Applied Ethics in Nanobiotechnology

An intensive training course for nanobiotechnology researchers on public communication and the ethical implications of nanobiotechnology. The course consists of an alternating programme of expert lectures, case studies, media training, role play, group discussions and debate.

13th European Congress on Biotechnology

The European Congress on Biotechnology brings together the top European and International scientists, biotechnologists, innovators and key biotech policy & decision makers in an un-precedented international meeting. The European Congress on Biotechnology was established in 1978 by the European Federation of Biotechnology. Previous editions attracted over 1,500 leading scientists and other senior participants, over 500 posters and more than a hundred exhibitors, from over 50 countries across Europe and beyond.

Communicating European Research 2005

On 14-15 November, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research will host the second “Communicating European Research” conference. Based on the very positive experiences from the 2004 edition, the event will focus on the manifold aspects of science communication and will provide an excellent forum and meeting place for scientists, communication professionals and journalists. The conference will also take stock of the way towards the Seventh Framework Programme.

The 6th EMBO/EMBL conference on Science and Society

Beijing 2005 PCST Symposium

Participants at the Beijing 2005 PCST Symposium will learn, share and discuss practical success stories about science communication. About 50 case studies will be selected from around the world for presentation in plenary or poster sessions. After each presentation session, small groups will discuss the strategic communication issues emerging from the case studies. The symposium presentations and discussions will form the basis of a book to be developed and published by the PCST Network.

Science and Society Forum 2005

Science has become ‘hard-wired’ into our society and permeates every aspect of our lives. As the scientific, social, ethical and economic stakes get higher, the scientific community and society at large need to engage in a deep-seated dialogue. The European Union – and its Member States – have spearheaded efforts in recent years to draw together the ‘innovation triangle’: science, society and the economy. The Science and Society Forum 2005 will review the success of these efforts and plot a new course forward in the form of a Charter on the Future of Science in Society.

Spotlight on teachers

The European Molecular Biology Organization announces its 4th International Workshop for secondary school science teachers. "Spotlight on teachers" will allow selected teachers who have done something special outside normal classroom teaching to present their work: for example, development of new teaching materials - especially practical experiments - or training of colleagues in new practical methods. All participants will also have the chance to discuss new experiments and approaches with leading researchers and science educators. As in previous EMBO teachers workshops, the programme comprises hands-on experiments for all, science talks, an exhibition area and discussions on teaching molecular biology in school.

Sharing Knowledge? Exploring the interfaces between science & society and the role of science communication. Announcement and Call for Papers

On the 1st and 2nd of November 2004, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is hosting the conference 'Sharing Knowledge? Exploring the interfaces between science & society and the role of science communication'. The first day focusses on transdisciplinary research and new approaches to complex problems, with key-note speeches by Prof. dr. J. Bunders (Professor of Biology & Society). Prof. dr. S. Hughes (Professor of Biotechnology and Industrial Research) and Prof. dr. J. Grin (Professor of Policy Studies & Systeminnovations). Workshop themes are, amongst others: Transdisciplinary Knowledge Production in Health Research, New Approaches to Complex Problems, Ethical Values and Scientific Knowledge Production, Social Responsible Enterprises. Abstracts for papers and posters are due on September 15, 2004.
